More:
Lyric Opera of Los Angeles (LOLA) is pleased to announce auditions for
its upcoming production of "Die Feen" (The Fairies) by Richard Wagner.
We are an official Partner of LA Opera for The Ring Festival
and our performances will be mingled in between their performances of
The Ring Cycle next May and June, 2010 (see performance schedule below).
There are many roles available in this interesting, lesser-known opera
of Wagner's. "Die Feen" is his first completed opera (at the age of
20) and is therefore not in the same style as what one thinks of when
you hear the name "Wagner". There are hints of what is to come, but
for the most part he is still emulating the opera composers of the day,
such as Weber and Marschner. As such, we are not necessarily looking
for typical Wagnerian voices. If you are comfortable with Weber, you
will be comfortable with this opera.
The chorus has some wonderful and exciting music in this opera as well,
so we are very much interested in strong ensemble singers in addition
to principals.
For those auditioning for Principal roles, please bring two contrasting
selections. One should be in German, preferably from the early
Romantic period. Please limit your audition piece to 3-5 minutes
long. We don't need to hear recitatives, and we really only need to
hear 1 verse.
Those auditioning for chorus, we simply ask that you limit your aria to
3-5 minutes long, and that your piece be operatic in nature (no musical
theatre or pop songs). If you do not have opera in your repertoire,
you are free to choose a song from the classical literature.
The vocal score for this opera is available online to download for free
(http://files.sheetmusicarchive.net/compositions_i/Wagner_-die_feen__vocal_score_.pdf).
Should you be so inclined, you may choose an excerpt to use as your
audition piece.
We are auditioning for all roles and chorus spots. As usual, we will
double-cast and have covers for all roles. Covers are required to help
fill out the chorus (no exceptions). Each cast will have at least 2
performances.
Roles:
Ada, a fairy - soprano
Farzana, a fairy - soprano
Zemina, a fairy - soprano
Arinadal, King of Tramond - tenor
Lora, his sister - soprano
Morald, her betrothed - tenor
Gernot, Arindal's friend - bass
Drolla, Lora's friend - soprano
Gunther, a courtier from Tramond - tenor
Harald, General of Groma the Magician - bass
A messenger - tenor
Voice of Gorma the Magician - bass
Fairy King - bass/bass-baritone
Performance Dates:
Friday, June 11 - 6:30pm call (Performance #1 - Blue cast)
Saturday, June 12 - 6:30pm call (Performance #2 - Red cast)
Thursday, June 17 - 6:30pm call (Performance #3 - Red cast)
Saturday, June 19 - 6:30pm call (Performance #4 - Blue cast)
*Possible additional performances TBD, including possible performance/s for covers.
Although we are unable to pay our singers at this time, we promise you
a memorable, fun and professional experience. Our musical standards
are high, and we have been exceedingly fortunate to have some of the
best local talent perform with us (repeatedly) over the years. One of
our primary goals as we go forward is to provide remuneration for
everyone involved in our productions. But it will take time to get to
that point.
Drop me an email or call and reserve your audition spot on either
November 21 or November 22. We'll look forward to hearing you then.
All the best,
~Laura Sage
